What Does a Backyard Badminton Court Need?

The director of Pogo Pictures in Atlanta, Georgia, Steve Colby leads a team of directors and producers in creating commercials and advertising campaigns for Fortune 500 clients such as Home Depot, Coca-Cola, Disney, and Verizon. A fan of recreational sports like ping pong and badminton, Steve Colby constructed a professional badminton court in his Atlanta, Georgia, backyard.

A popular recreational activity for both singles and doubles, badminton is a racquet sport that involves hitting a shuttlecock, also known as a birdie, over a raised net. Because of its feathered design, the shuttlecock can be difficult to control in windy weather, so a backyard protected from extreme wind makes the ideal setting.

A backyard badminton court also requires a smooth, level surface, either paved or with trimmed grass (or laid with polymer sport tiles for more serious players). The net should be five feet tall in the center, and the court should have 30 feet of vertical clearance to ensure the birdie does not get stuck in overhead tree branches. Regulation size badminton courts measure 20 feet by 44 feet.
